When doing research for last week's domestic violence issue of the Raising More Money E-New$, we came across a statistic from the American Institute on Domestic Violence that gave us pause. We were shocked to learn that every day, three women in the United States are murdered and some 12,000 women are physically assaulted by their husbands or intimate partners. The American Bar Association Commission on Domestic Violence, meanwhile, reports that nearly one in three adult women experience at least one physical assault by a partner during adulthood.
Sojourner Center, a domestic violence shelter in Phoenix, is one of the many domestic violence shelters in this country giving women hope. Sojourner Center's mission is simple: "Overcoming the Impact of Domestic Violence, One Life at a Time."
But their task is huge. Maricopa County in Arizona, where Sojourner Center is located, has nine domestic violence shelters but had to turn away approximately 15,000 women last year, according to Heather Baxter, the development director at Sojourner. Sojourner Center is now expanding and is more committed than ever to their mission.
For how the Sojourner Center team became experts at connecting people to their mission, read their inspirational story on the Raising More Money Web site.
